Theresearcherscreatedalong-termstudyinwhichtheyinvitedfamiliesin16schooldistrictsincentralPennsylvaniatoparticipate.Ineachfamilyateenagerayoungersiblingtheirmotherandtheirfatherwereinterviewedathomeandthenaskedabouttheiractivitiesandself-worthfivetimesoveraperiodofsevenyears.
Thestudyauthorsweresurprisedtodiscoverthatwhenfathersspentmoretimealonewiththeirteenagersthekidsreportedtheyfeltbetteraboutthemselves.Somethingaboutthefather’sroleinthefamilyseemedtoimproveself-esteemamongtheteenagersinthestudysaidstudyauthorSusanMcHaleaprofessorofhumandevelopmentatPennsylvaniaStateUniversity.
“TimespentwithDadofteninvolvesjokingteasingandotherplayfulinteractions.Fathersascomparedtomothersweremoreinvolvedinleisureactivitiesandhadmorefriend-likeinteractionswiththeirchildrenwhichiscrucialforyouthsocialdevelopment”thestudyshowed.
ButMartaFlaumapsychologistinChappaquaNewYorksaid“Howthesefindingsreflecttherealworldisarealquestion.ThesampleinthestudyissosmallandsounrepresentativeofmorefamiliesinthecountrytodaythatI’mnotsurehowmuchwecangeneralizingfromit.InmycommunityinWestchesterCountyIdon’tseeparentsandteenagersspendingmuchtimetogetheratall.Parentsareoftenworkingsohardandhavelesstimetobetogetherwiththeirkids.”
HoweverFlaumencouragesparentstommaketimefortheirkidsnomatterhowmuchworktheyhavetodo.“Researchlikethisremindsusofhowimportantitis.Thetimewehavewiththemissoshort”shesaid.
